Even when your business is in good shape
from a health and safety management point of view, and
your staff are well trained to deal with most issues,
matters may crop up from time-to-time where you may value
access to professional help.
Or maybe, you’d like someone to
help on a more regular basis (for example, one day per
month?) to sort out all the paperwork, help with risk
assessments, or chair the health and safety committee.
The choice is of course yours, but you
should be reminded of the legal requirements:
The law in the UK requires organisations
of all sizes to appoint one or more persons to assist
in undertaking the measures needed to comply with health,
safety and fire laws. This is a requirement of the Management
of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, part of
the infamous ‘six-pack’.
In a perfect world, all organisations
would employ their own ‘competent person’
– a health and safety specialist. Some perhaps smaller
organisations however, may not need this type of advice
on a full-time basis, nor be able or willing to afford
a full-time health and safety advisor. They are left to
decide whether to delegate key roles to staff who may
not understand the complex nature of health and safety
laws – for example risk assessment, or COSHH –
or simply to break the law.
